Take a weighted, multi-dimensional assessment. Get matched to an archetype profile. Explore careers that cite public U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and O*NET® sources on every card. About fifteen minutes to your first results—with optional experience context and Limitless Coach tools when you want extra support.
Most career quizzes collapse you into one of sixteen types. We keep your profile multi-dimensional, because your life is.
Sort you into a single letter-code or color. Offer a short list of generic careers that fit every other person with the same code. No citations. No connection to what you’ve actually done.
Weighted scoring across seven independent domains produces a seven-trait fingerprint as specific as you are. That fingerprint maps to a named archetype with Core Anchors, real strengths, honest tensions, and blind spots. Career matches cite public U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and O*NET® sources on every card, and any resume or experience you add gives the generated writing real context.
The full engine, in seven steps. Each is explained in detail below.

Limitless49 weighted, multiple-choice questions. About eight to ten minutes.
Each of the 49 questions belongs to one of seven domains. Every question offers four answer choices, and each choice maps to a specific trait (for example, Analytical, Visual, Verbal, or Holistic under Cognitive Orientation) and carries a numeric weight. As you answer, we add those weights into a running score for each trait.
At the end, the highest-scoring trait in each of the seven domains becomes one of your “anchor” traits. That gives you a seven-trait fingerprint—one anchor per domain—drawn from 28 possible traits in total (four per domain). It’s the combination, not any single trait, that makes the profile specifically yours.
Four traits per domain, seven domains scored independently — 47 = 16,384 unique combinations. Where a four-letter quiz puts you in one of sixteen buckets, Compass places you in one of over sixteen thousand. That’s the resolution we care about, because two people who share a letter-code can still want very different careers.
The multi-dimensional nature of the profile is what makes career matching work. Two people can both be “introverts” and want very different jobs. We look at how your cognition, energy, motivation, risk tolerance, and growth style interact.
How your mind engages with the world: strategic versus analytical, visual versus verbal, systems-level versus step-by-step.
Your natural tempo: bursts and pivots versus long stretches of deep work; multitasking versus methodical focus.
Collaborative versus autonomous; harmony-seeking versus debate-driven; communication style in teams.
What actually moves you: hard problems, helping people grow, creating beauty or structure, visible impact.
Bold leaps and gray areas versus guardrails and predictability—a major factor in which environments drain or fuel you.
Fast-moving startups versus steady institutions; structured hierarchies versus flat, creative teams.
Constant stretch goals versus space to build confidence; how you receive coaching and measure progress.
When solving a complicated problem, you naturally…
Every answer is a valid way of being wired. Each one adds weight to a different trait in the Cognitive Orientation domain. After 49 questions, the highest-weighted trait in each of the seven domains becomes one of your anchors.
Once the assessment produces your seven anchor traits, Compass resolves that fingerprint to a named archetype profile—an identity that captures how those traits interact. If the exact fingerprint already exists in the generated trait library, Compass uses that profile. If not, it deterministically selects the nearest generated profile by trait overlap. That lookup is anchored to your quiz results, not a live AI call, so your archetype stays stable while the library expands.
Each archetype profile includes:
A specific identity (e.g., “The Quiet Force”) with a one-line summary of what you bring.
The three load-bearing traits from your seven—the ones that most shape how you work and why.
Three to five concrete, specific capabilities your wiring produces—not vague affirmations.
The internal frictions your trait combination creates, paired with how you resolve them.
Honest cautions, written warmly. Things to watch for so they don’t cost you later.
The environments, cultures, and team shapes where this combination actually thrives.
One sentence on the unique contribution your specific wiring is built to make.
Traits explain how you’re wired. Experience grounds it in what you’ve already done. This step is optional. You can upload a resume (PDF, DOCX, DOC, or TXT, up to 5 MB) and we’ll extract the text, send it to the admin-selected AI model, and turn it into structured entries automatically. You can also add jobs, education, volunteering, and projects by hand.
When experience is present, those entries feed the prompts used for your narrative, career matches, and reflections. Your archetype profile is included alongside them, so the writing can reference both how you’re wired and what you’ve actually done—instead of reading like a generic trait readout.
You can edit your experience any time from the compass page. Adding a new job, class, volunteer role, or project flags your compass as stale so it can be refreshed with the new context, subject to the regeneration rules below.
Once your profile is built, Compass gives you:
• Your archetype hero & profile dashboard. Your archetype name and tagline sit at the top, with a compact dashboard showing Core Anchors, Strengths, Built-In Tensions, Blind Spots, Natural Habitat, and Gift to the World—pulled straight from your matched profile.
• A personal narrative. Four paragraphs describing who you are, how your wiring shows up in real life, the impact you’re built to make, and honest encouragement for the path ahead.
• Reflections on your past. For each job, class, volunteer role, or project you’ve added, Compass writes a trait-grounded reflection: what likely felt alive, what drained you, and which career paths naturally pick up where that experience left off. Free users see one reflection; paid users and active site-license members unlock the rest.
• Career matches on their own page. Click “Careers” from the header to see your matches. Free users see one; paid users and active site-license members see all six. Each match includes a personal-fit explanation referencing your anchors, BLS median salary, growth outlook, demand level, education path, and a day-in-the-life snapshot.
• A deep dive for each match. Each match can include up to 15 panels: personal fit, experience-applied context when available, friction points, overview, salary and market outlook, education and credentials, skills, alternative paths, start-now actions, progression, AI and future outlook, day-in-the-life, ask-a-question, resources, and related careers.
Your compass is dense on purpose—there’s a lot to say about who you are. The first time your profile is generated, we’ll ask whether you’d like a Guided Tour or would rather dive in on your own. The tour is a nine-step walkthrough that spotlights one section at a time, with plain-English explanations written for a student audience.
The order is designed to feel like a story: your archetype first, then your Core Anchors and Strengths (the most concrete parts of who you are), then your fuller story, your growing edges, where you thrive, the unique gift only you bring, how your past roles fit, and finally the hand-off to your career matches.
You can start the tour anytime from the “Guided Tour” button in the hero of your compass page—even after you’ve finished it or skipped it. Keyboard users can use the arrow keys to move between steps and Escape to close.
Your wiring doesn’t change often, but your experience does. When you add a new job, class, volunteer role, or project, Compass can automatically regenerate with the fresh context on your next visit. Paid users and active site-license members can also retake the assessment up to 2 times per month—each retake triggers an automatic regeneration so your compass reflects the latest results.
There are two regeneration quotas. Automatic regenerations fire whenever your experience or quiz answers change: paid users and active site-license members get 10 per month; Free users get one lifetime freebie the first time they save experience. Manual regenerations—a button on your compass that refreshes your matches on demand—are available to paid users and active site-license members, 2 per calendar month. Internal GiftMatch staff accounts are uncapped for testing.
You can also click related careers from a deep dive to generate new full deep dives on demand. Cached related careers do not consume quota; new related-career generations are limited to 3 per week on Free and 40 per week for paid users and active site-license members.
Compass helps you understand direction. The Coach toolkit helps you act on it. Limitless unlocks a resume workshop with saved drafts and browser PDF export, interview practice with generated questions and answer help, live job searches from Adzuna and USAJOBS, and skills-development suggestions tied to your target careers.
Coach uses your Compass careers, traits, experience, and location context where available. It is gated by the Limitless plan; Free and Pro users see the Limitless upgrade gate. Active site-license members receive Pro-level Compass access, but Coach still requires a personal Limitless account.
